My first day in art class.
At a certain point my dad, seeing how I was drawing all the time and
getting better, he decided I needed to go to a real art school. So he trotted me
into New York City to the Art Students League of New York at the tender age of 12.
I was 12. Not my dad.
This school had been teaching students since the late 1800s.
My dad said tothe registrar lady,"I want to put my son in a drawing class.
"She replied, "Life Drawing?" He had no clue what that meant
but he guessed it had nothing to do about death so he said, "Sure."
We bought the necessary materials, and after lunch walked into the classroom
where a NAKED WOMAN was posing while all the adult students were busy
getting ready to draw her. I started drawing really small in my big drawing pad
(so I wouldn't waste too much paper) and tried not to tremble.
Louis Priscilla, was a tough little Italian wearing a light grey suit. Really? In a class working in charcoal? He sidled up to us and eyed my dad ogling the naked model.
YESSSSSSSS????As if to say, WHAT THE F- -K ARE YOU STILL DOING HERE???
My dad's face went red (crimson?) and I will never forget the look on his face as he backed out
of the studio apologizing with his shoulders. A site I will never forget.
That was my first day in art school.
